LITTLE ROCK, ARK.; SEPTEMBER 27, 2011 – The 4th annual B Street Rib Off will take place on Saturday, October 22 at MacArthur Park in Little Rock. This year’s competition will feature a BBQ rib cooking competition and a side dish competition that will be judged by event attendees. All proceeds from the B Street Rib Off will benefit the Arkansas chapter of the American Cancer Society. The winner of the rib competition will receive a trophy and the winner of the side dish competition will receive a plaque.
“We’re glad to have given just under $700 to the Arkansas chapter of the American Cancer Society last year. That money was used to send two children to summer camp,” said event founder, Justin Hinton.
Four man teams may enter the competition with an entry fee of $75, which includes two event Tshirts. Event organizers expect to donate over $1000 to the American Cancer Society after the event. This is the first year for the competition to be an official nonprofit organization after completing the process to become 501(c)(3) certified.
“It feels great to reach this point. We knew that we had enough interest to make this a philanthropy event and we finally did it,” said event founder, Matthew Ross. “We had a goal of reaching the nonprofit status by the 5th year and we’re excited to have reached that goal early.”
The B Street Rib Off was founded in 2008 by Jason Brown, Justin Hinton and Matthew Ross as a friendly competition to establish the best rib cook in the group. After hosting five teams in their backyard the first year, the three decided to continue the competition in 2009, when the competition moved to Murray Park in Little Rock. The second year of the competition included 12 competing teams and over 100 spectators. All proceeds from the event were invested back into the event for 2010. In 2010, the committee chose to dedicate the event as a fundraiser for the Arkansas chapter of the American Cancer Society.
